Mezcalero is a son of the world renowned Voltaire, who gained acclaim as both a sire and as an international competitor. Mezcalero's dam, Olympic Zamira, by the supersire Ramiro, represented Holland in international competition. Mezcalero has posted clear rounds and placings at such prestigious locations as Aachen, Madrid, Lisbon, Mexico City, Monterrey, and Bromont. He qualified for the WEG in Rome in 1997, as well as the PanAm Games in 1999. He placed 10th or better in four World Cup Qualifiers, with his best finish a 2nd in Mexico City in 1996. Mezcalero was retired by rider, Mexican Team member Frederico Fernandez, and subsequently sold to United States interests.

Today many of his offspring are competing up to Grand Prix levels. Apache, owned by Richard Spooner, is a two time champion of the western YJC and is now placing in mid-level Grand Prix and represented the US in Italy during the summer of 2007. Mississippi LS, owned by Jorge Versuyvel, won the Canadian Young Horse Championships, the Thunderbird Park Six Bar class and the North American Young Horse Championships in Monterrey, all in 2007. Other upcoming superstars are Mexicano and Tequilero.
