What is a Belgian Warmblood?
The Belgian Warmblood is the product of decades of selective breeding of European Warmbloods (Hanoverian, Holsteiner, Selle Francais and Dutch), Thoroughbreds, and Anglo-Arabs with Belgium's finest light agricultural horses. The resulting modern Belgian Warmblood is an ideal riding and competition sport horse of international quality. Belgian Warmbloods are Bred to Perform!
OBJECTIVES OF BWP/NAD
The Belgian Warmblood Breeding Association, North American District, was established by a group of breeders, owners and friends dedicated to the recognition, promotion, importation and preservation of the Belgian Warmblood in North America. It is a fully recognized district of Belgium and serves as the sole administrating office for breeding practices on the North American Continent. By monitoring breeding through Keurings, or approvals, the BWP-NAD ensures the selective breeding of the ideal sporthorse. Only quality horses are admitted to the registry through the visual inspection and evaluation of the stallions, mares and foals. The Belgian jury looks for horses that have correct, modern conformation, athletic potential in the Olympic disciplines, proven bloodlines, good character, reliable temperament, and above all, the potential to pass these features on to their offspring.
The BWP-NAD continues Belgium's fine breeding tradition by affording owners in North America the opportunity to breed mares and stallions approved by the verband. The goal - to encourage the excellence of Belgian Warmbloods in all disciplines, to ensure their position in the international marketplace and to bring joy to their owners.
Why Should I join BWP?
The BWP/NAD sponsors many events for it's members and their horses each year. Individual breed classes may be sponsored at major breed shows. These classes are open to BWP offspring owned by active members. We also sponsor All Breed Awards in conjunction with the USDF. National yearling and two year old futurities are held in conjunction with the annual breeding inspection tour (Keuring). These are open to BWP registered offspring with prizes to the highest scoring horses in each category as judged by the Belgian Keuring Jury. BWP/NAD also sponsors Lifetime Achievement Awards for performance in Dressage, Hunter/Jumper competitions, and Combined Training. The awards are only open to members with BWP horses. The submission form and requirements are in the Stallion Directory, which is available to members at no charge. The association publishes a monthly e-newsletter, with current information on the association, breed and show results, birth announcements (of the four legged kind) and BWP sanctioned events. Members can place free classified ads in the newsletter or on the website. The BWP-NAD can arrange buying trips to Belgium for members.
