Stallion Approval Process

Eligibility: Registered European Warmblood stallions are eligible for inspection by the BWP. They must be three years old or older, by approved stallions(not just registered or licensed) from a recognized European Warmblood Association and out of main studbook dams. The stallions sire and dam do not have to be of the same "breed", but must be of proven competition bloodlines.

Quality: Judges first inspect the stallion's pedigree. If the judges feel that the stallion is of sufficient pedigree then the stallions are shown in hand on the triangle at a walk and trot If the quality of the gaits and conformation are sufficient the stallion will be asked to free jump. The stallion is evaluated on jumping style. If the jumping style is adequate the stallion may be asked to be shown under saddle if trained to do so. Provisional approval is given to stallions meeting the stringent requirements of the Belgian Verband. The stallions that acquire provisional approval must then undergo a veterinary examination.

Exam: The examination is to include a semen analysis and radiographs of the fore feet (regular and navicular), fore fetlocks, knees, rear fetlocks, hocks and stifles. This examination must show the stallion to be free of inheritable disease. Report of findings, semen analysis and radiographs must be submitted to the BWP/NAD secretary before the stallion is given a breeding book for the season for which he has been approved. Provisional approval is maintained until the stallion completes performance requirements set by the BWP/NAD and approved by the BWP. Contact the secretary for the performance requirements.

Approval: Provisionally approved stallions have three years from the time of approval to complete these performance requirements to maintain approval. Provisionally approved stallions will be indicated by an (*) asterisk by their names in the stallion directory and all promotional materials. Stallions failing to meet these requirements will have their licenses revoked. In order to maintain approval status, a stallion must be presented to the BWP keuring committee a minimum of once every 3 years and must present offspring that exhibit consistent quality with the standards set forth by the Belgian Verband. If a stallion is not presented, or the foal crop is consistently determined to be inferior, his license may be rescinded by the European office. Stallion owners must always be members in good standing of the BWP/NAD.
